Charleville Golf Club

The club is holding the inaugural Tony Murphy Memorial competition on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September. The competition will be a Champagne Scramble. Tony was The Honorary Secretary of Charleville Golf Club for 44years, he took up the position in 1963. The club progressed at a very fast pace during these years going from 9 holes to 12 and then to 18 holes and later to 27. Due to financial reasons, during recessionary times, this has since been reduced to 18 holes. On the occasion of Tony’s retirement it showed how highly regarded he was , his portrait, which is displayed in the hallway of the clubhouse, was unveiled by Sean McMahon, chairman of the Munster Branch G.U.I.
The practice putting green is also dedicated to Tony.
The following heading “”Singularly soft tones guide clubs fortunes”” appeared in an article on golf by the renowned golf correspondent Dermot Gilleece in The Irish Times on Tuesday 7th. April 1998, following a visit to the club, and is a reference to his perception of Tony, and in the course of the article, in no uncertain terms, recommended the club hold on to him as long as possible. This complete article has been framed and now hangs proudly in the foyer of the clubhouse. A big highlight for Tony was hosting the visit of the legendary J.B. Carr and wife Mary to the clubhouse.
At the A.G.M. Of the Munster Branch, G.U.I. in 1999 Tony was the recipient of a presentation to mark being honoured as Munster Golf Administrator of the year.
Another accolade was conferred on him in 2008 when he was presented with a People of The Year Award by Charleville Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his service to golf.
Rita, Tony’s wife has kindly given the club a Perpetual Shield and is also sponsoring 1st prize.
