Mens Club Newsletter Q2 2016

Dear Members,

To follow on from our newsletter in Q1 please see below updates from the last couple of months.

Weather

After the atrocious winter we all endured, the weather has improved however still not as much as we all would have hoped for. Feb – April were colder and wetter than usual meaning lift, clean and place was still necessary. Big improvement in the sunny weather towards the end of May meaning shorts and sunscreen is the order of the day lately – and long may it continue.

Course

We received the below update from Carl McCarthy regarding the course:

The latest update on the 15th hole is that the tee box has been prepared and will be finished off when the weather allows. The recent wet and cold weather set this back a little but we still hope to have it ready for play towards the end of the summer. The necessary trees have been felled and the remaining branches and stumps have been removed. The recent greens aeration went well and the greens are now recovering. Thanks to members for their patience with this necessary work. The driving range got a makeover and is now looking better. Thanks to the volunteers for doing this work. If possible we would also like to get a team of volunteers that would rake the bunkers a couple of mornings a week. If anyone is willing to give time to do this, myself or Eoghan would love to hear from you. If this job is done voluntarily it would free the staff up to do other necessary work on the course. There is also a lot of pitch marks still being left unrepaired on greens. We would like to insist that members repair their own pitch marks (and others if seen) as soon as possible after they are made. A quickly repaired pitch mark with heal quicker and cause less long term damage and contribute to the overall health of the greens. We would also encourage members to replace divots and rake bunkers after use. Hope you all have a good summer of golfing.

Carl McCarthy, On behalf of the Course Committee.

Juniors

We require volunteers to assist with the overseeing and running of the junior competitions during the weeks of the summer holidays. Anybody that would be interested please leave your name in the Pro shop or Office and we would be delighted to discuss this further with you.

Competitions

The Tuesday open competitions up and running so please spread the word and invite friends to come and play in these competitions.

The Monday evening 9 hole scramble is starting back up on May 16th for the summer months, so this is a relaxed and friendly way to meet other members and enjoy the stretch in the evenings. They are very friendly and social and everyone is welcome so please come along.

Also, there is a social 9 hole singles organised each Friday. There is a rolling draw in operation after 5:30pm, so after your working week is done, come down and head out for a quick enjoyable round. This is played from the forward green tees so plenty of birdies and pars to be had.

We would encourage members to support and play in the weekend club competitions also; because of weather competition entries have been down and we would like to see the number of competitors increase to foster a good competitive club atmosphere.

Land Sale

We have received confirmation from the Parent Committee that all the i’s have been dotted and t’s crossed and the sale of the land has been completed and contracts exchanged.

Golfer of the Year Events (GOY)

After 4 events it is close at the top. Normally the top 20 finishers receive points (20 for 1st and 1 for 20th), but for Captains Prize and Presidents Prize there will be 30 points to play for so it is all still up for grabs and plenty of moving and shuffling sure to take place in the league table.

We would urge all members to try to attend as many of these Competitions as possible throughout the season and challenge for the prestigious title of Golfer of the Year. There is a league table posted in the locker room which will be updated after each event showing who is topping the leader board.

Teams

Our Pierce Purcell; Jimmy Bruen and Fred Daly all put up a good showing but came up just short on the days and failed to progress out of our groups. Many thanks to the members who represented us by captaining; playing and supporting our teams in their matches. If you are interested in helping organise next years teams or playing in the relevant competition suitable, please do mention to a member of mens committee or look out for sign up sheets in the locker room.

75th Anniversary

2016 marks the 75th Anniversary of Charleville Golf Club. There has been a committee formed to plan and organise special events throughout the year to mark this special milestone.

Fashion Show

The first special event to mark the 75th anniversary was a very enjoyable fashion show. It was very well attended and the models carried out their duties with style and panache!

Club Classic

A very successful 75th anniversary club classic was run from 29th April to 1st May. This event went very smoothly and the course was presented in great condition. There were great reports fed back in relation to the course and also the mid round burger and dinner. So many thanks to be given to Eoghan and team, and also Nora Mays, and all who helped out in ensuring this weekend ran without a hitch.

For events that will be held later on in the year, please try to attend and enjoy the events.

If you have any further suggestions you wish to be implemented notify a committee member for discussion and consideration.
