Newsletter Feb 2020

The playing year got off to a great start with large numbers attending the officers drive-in and playing the scramble afterwards.  This was followed by the draw for the men’s winter league.  Participation was high & the league is now in full swing. There has been some exceptional scoring and some not so.   It is difficult to assess at this stage which teams will make the finals.  Scoring as at 9th February 2020 is now displayed on the notice board in the club house foyer & will be on our website and Facebook page also.   Weather permitting we hope to conclude the qualifying rounds by Thursday 20th February with the quarter finals on Sunday 23rd February.

The ladies Spring League is now up and running and to date 64 ladies are taking part which is a great response.  Entry is still possible so if you want to play please enter as soon as possible.  To help ladies to play on time there will be a draw on Saturday mornings (weather permitting) at 11am, otherwise play as you may to complete your rounds in time.

Don’t forget Thursday 13th February is the final day for booking your ticket to Limerick Greyhound Track on the 22nd February.  Add your name to the list in the locker rooms or ring the office to book in.  We would like to see a good crowd going from the club as it is always an enjoyable evening.

We have now received 3 (fairway/greens/roughs) of our new mowers so when the weather improves a bit you will  see them in full swing.  This should make our course look tremendous & very enjoyable to play. Thanks to the Sports Capital Programme Grant for their 95% contribution towards the cost of these machines.  Given the time of the year and the weather the course is in good condition and those particularly enjoying this are the men’s seniors, with large entries on Wednesdays. Last weeks numbers just short of 60 so we done to Noel, John and their team for organising the draws weekly.

Both the men’s & ladies clubs will be organising a “Get into Golf programme” in April & May so if you have any friends, relatives, young or old, who might like to play golf let them know about this initiative.  Get them involved !  There will be more details about this nearer to the time.

It’s great to see that the Junior Section of the club will be up and running again this year.  A sincere thank you to our Junior officer, Catherine O’Connell & her committee.   A lot of work goes on behind the scenes in order to have volunteers vetted and courses completed before they can help out.

March 21st is the start of the men’s cups competitions.  The ’March Cup’ is due to be played over that weekend.  All cup competitions will include points towards golfer of the year (GOY) and cup competitions will vary between stroke play and stableford.  ‘Mother’s Day’ competition for the ladies will be held on that  week end also.  The following week end 28/29th March a ‘Shrubs & Bulbs fundraiser’ will be held.  We plan to add a bit of colour to the course  at different times of the year by planting shrubs and bulbs  – more about this nearer the time.

The club team selectors/managers are discussing their options for 2020.   Watch out  Ladies and Gentlemen  for announcements,  as panels will be in place by April/May.    More information will follow in due course.

We hope you all enjoy your golf & club facilities in 2020

Regards

Gay & Phil
